The Exaltation of Inanna tells of Enheduanna's trauma of being removed from her quarters and banished from the temples of Ur and Uruk. This was due to a rebellion against her father, Sargon, by a rebel military officer. Ultimately this situation was remedied when some of her relatives stepped in to reclaim the empire, but she was bereft at her loss. She wrote her woes to Inanna. In The Exaltation of Innana, she seems to blame part of the problem on her spiritual husband. This part of the hymn is presented by Roberta Binkley in Enheduanna, Daughter of King Sargon: Princess, Poet, Priestess.
Banishment from Ur
"You asked me to enter the holy cloister,
The Giparu,
and I went inside, I the high priestess
Enheduanna!
I carried the ritual basket and sang
Your praise.
Now I am banished among the lepers.
Even I cannot live with you.
Shadows approach the light of day, the light
Is darkened around me,
Shadows approach the daylight,
Covering the day with sandstorm.
My soft mouth of honey is suddenly confused.
My beautiful face is dust."
A Curse on Uruk
"What am I in the place of nourishment
And sleep?
What am I now?
That city of Uruk has become an evil rebel
Against your god.
An, make it surrender. Cut it in two!
Let Enlil curse it!
Let its whining child go without a pampering
Mother.
O lady, the harp of mourning is on a hostile shore,
Dragged over the rocks.
When the people of the city hear my sacred song,
They are ready to die."
It appears to have been a desperate time in her life.
